About the martial art
Taekkyeon (in Hangeul ν견 or νκ»Έ) — also spelled Taekkyon, Taekyun or Taekyon — is an amazing ancient martial art of Korea mentioned in documents as early as the 18th century which was registered by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011 and by the Korean government as the 76th intangible cultural heritage. Taekkyeon is 1 of the 3 most ancient Korean martial arts & fighting sports along with Ssireum (belt wrestling) and Gukgung/Hwalssogi (thumb archery).
Some of its features:
- An addicting and unique dancelike 3-beat rhythmical step (called Pumbapgi νλ°κΈ°) which is a great way of getting exercise for the lower body while improving one’s balance on one or two feet.
- A joyful and moderate spirit in the traditional team competitions of Taekkyeon called Gyeollyeon Taekgyeon κ²°λ ¨ν견) practiced in the Joseon period and registered since 2022 as Seoul’s intangible heritage No. 56.
- Pushing strikes which make kicks, arm and hand attacks softer, less painful, on the opponent and more fun to use in a friendly competition.
- A traditional freestyle improvised demonstration (called Bonttae Boegi λ³Έλλ΅κΈ°) done in front of the opponent and spectators which helps gain confidence in front of people.
- Effective techniques for real combat (see Yetbeop techniques) using all parts of the body (and especially the strongest) on an adversary weak areas
